Buttermere Canoe Expedition

Epic

This is an extended journey that takes you from the heart of the valley all the way to the sea! The trip will take two days and can involve an overnight camp or other accommodation.

Canoes are journeying boats and this magnificent trip provides the full experience. The expedition begins on Buttermere lake and follows the river at the north end into Crummock Water. After travelling the full length of Crummock Water we join the river Cocker and follow it all the way to the confluence with the river Derwent at Cockermouth. From there we follow the river Derwent to Workington and the coast!

This journey will use many of the strategies that make canoes so versatile. If there is wind in the right direction we will hoist a sail. Boats will be lined, carried or trolleyed around any sections of river that are too challenging to paddle (portage). Those who choose to camp will also sleep in a bivouac under a tarpaulin. Alternatively, we will arrange for bed and breakfast accommodation for those who would prefer this.

A canoe expedition is an intensely rewarding experience which involves some hard physical work at times. Anyone who would like to take on this wonderful challenge should have good physical fitness and be prepared to rough it a bit. Remember, it’s an expedition!
