Description
Not strictly a cave, but close – a remarkable mine with a very significant history. Inside the entrance at the top of a steep slope, a passage leads to a series of abseils and tunnels deep within the hillside, created over 700 years ago to dig out what was then a very precious mineral – graphite. You will eventually pass the railway lines on which carts were used to remove material, before reaching an exit several levels down.
This trip requires caving techniques and equipment, so you will be provided with a helmet, a headtorch and a harness for the abseils. You will need to have good physical fitness for the walk to get to the entrance, and be happy lowering down the shafts. Your guide will of course manage your safety throughout the journey.
Bookings need to be made at least 5 days in advance, but contact us if you require something more immediate and we may still be able to help.
